Who needs clothes....

So yesterday I was catching up on all the tv I missed last week and I was watching the latest episode of abc's Shark Tank (one of my newest obsessions).
If you haven't seen it, the concept of the show is people pitch their business ideas to captains of their industries in the hopes to get investments from the "sharks". It really good, you should watch it sometime. But anyway, on this episode two girls come on and they have this business called Litter Jewelry. But they are not just making earrings and bracelets, they have:
Chain Mustaches
Chain Vests
Even shoe jewelry

So, they got me thinking about this unconventional jewelry. While, one of the sharks, Kevin O'Leary
said he had never seen anything like these, I can't say the same. I have seen some pretty interesting jewelry. However, I've never seen so much of it in the same place. And I commend these girls for doing so many different things, especially since they only use vintage chain and at the time they went on the show they were creating everything themselves.
I could see this unconventional jewelry becoming a big trend in the future. Here are some examples of in on the runways now.

This is by a brand called Ashish for their Fall/winter 2012
This piece is by a label called "Oh Boy" also for Fall/winter 2012
And this is my Favorite. It is Alexander McQueen spring/summer 2012.

So, I will leave you with that. Although creative jewelry has been around for awhile a lot of people are just starting to see it, so if you want to grab some attention why don't you try making some of your own from vintage jewelry.

What is it like?....

I don't think many people outside of my major realize one very important thing... How much space it takes up! Seriously. I have fabric and supplies stashed all over my apartment. My roommate has to watch out because I've filled all the nooks and crannies in my room and hers is next! Just kidding! The space under your bed is safe Antonia. Don't Worry.
But anyway, the point is I use every available space for storage because otherwise my apartment is a mess all the time instead of just when I have a project due. Here are some examples:
I found these "shelves" on the side of the road and filled
them up as soon as I got home.
Here is the inside of my ribbon/craft box.

This is my completely unorganized side of our spare closet
Under my bed I have two VERY full storage boxes

Which is why they stay under the bed. I promise they were a lot tidier at the beginning of the school year.
I'm lucky enough to have this beautiful notions box that my dad got me at an estate sale.

It defiantly does not go to waste.
And last but not least my sewing cabinet that holds spare threads, bobbins and most importantly my wonderful sewing machine, Edna. But don't worry not even wall space goes to waste as that is where I hang my ironing board.
So, that is where I work. Now, let me show you what I've been up to in it.
A garment I made recently was my dress for Go Red for the american heart association. This is it on a dress form:
You can also see it make a cameo in my closet photo.

What I just finished yesterday is a project for my accessories class. It is a purse inspired by vintage luggage. I used embellishment as part of my design focus and used decorative stitches to create a "plaid".
This is my dining room table in the midst of a project. Ahh I know it's bad!
And finally! Here is my purse! Its a cross-body bag with an adjustable strap.

That's all for now! I hope you enjoyed your peek into my creative zone!

Spring 2012 Storyboards

So, for this blog post I have created 2 storyboards for the Spring 2012 season. It is up to you to decide which one you like the most and tell me, comments will be most appreciated. Without further ado...
Let's forget our morals and wear some florals

When I was looking through this years designer collections I just kind of stumbled upon the fact that there were a LOT of floral prints. And as a vintage lover this trend defiantly spoke to me.  I chose a brighter color palette because it brings it to a more current place.
Then we'll pretend we're hunnie bunnies in the 1920's

On the second story board I stuck to my theme from last weeks Great Gatsby post. I saw lots of geometric style lines and low or non existent waist lines. I kept the colors more subdued with this board because I feel it suits the mood better.
That's it for now. Let me know which you prefer!

Oh Gatsby! You're Great!

Trend forecasting in fashion is a huge market designers need to know what will be big way before it happens so that their collections will be out when a trend hits it big. Trend spotters use major events that they know will happen in coming years to reason what will be popular, such as movies, politics, album releases, and many other pre-planned events. Since I love movies, and their influence on fashion I looked up what big movies are coming out this year and GUESS WHAT! Baz Luhrmann remade the Great Gatsby! I can't tell you how excited I am to see the 1920's fashion, and even better it stars Leo DiCaprio, Carrie Mulligan and Isla Fisher.

Here are a few exciting stills from the film:

Just look at Carrie Mulligan's Jewelry in the first shot!

Apparently, I'm not the first person to connect the dots on the fact that this movie is going to be a BIG deal. 1920's fashion is all over the runways for spring 2012.This look is Derek Lam:Derek Lam Spring 2012 Ready-to-Wear

It seems as though the whole collection is inspired by the movie. You can see these pictures and others Here
Another brand that jumped on the bandwagon was Etro, here are some images from their line.

And you can see that whole collection here.

I love the reemergence of the drop waist and geometric shapes that this has brought forward, and I can't wait to attend the theme party's that this movie is sure to inspire. I already have my dress picked out! And just because you've been so nice to read this whole entry I'll give you a reward.
Yep he's all dressed up. Just for you.
